Course Description

In this lesson, ExecSense and CTM of Columbia University examine the changing role of the CIO in the face of disruptive technologies and why you as a technology leader are in a unique position to reinvent and evolve your company culture. Take the 50 minutes to learn how to thrive in a VUCA world and use technology to turn your organization into an agile agent of innovation.

This lesson is led by an expert on the topic, Dr. Art Langer (Director for the Center of Technology Management of Columbia University), and focuses on balancing the roles of driver and supporter as technology leader, the three broadening dimensions of technology, and using disruptive forces to your advantage.

In this 50-minute session, you will learn:

  • A comprehensive explanation of the three broadening dimensions of technology: acceleration, dynamic behavior, and unpredictable outcomes
  • How to succeed in a world that is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA), and why technology leaders must overcome fear of the unknown to increase their positions for their own good and the financial health of their companies
  • Why implementing continuous improvement practices, understanding changes in the market, and creating dynamic internal processes are fundamental strategies for gaining respect as a technology executive
  • A breakdown of the key differences between the roles of supporters and drivers in business and why a CIO has to balance those roles expertly
  • How to make the case for the power of new technologies at the executive level by articulating the consequences of not changing, including blocked solutions, low market penetration, missed opportunities, loss of talent, and overprotection of the status quo
